Student leadership positions

New Student Programs relies on the service of Virginia Tech students to welcome new Hokies and Hokie Families to our university. Our student leader positions include the following:

First-Year Orientation Leaders

First-Year Orientation Leaders (OLs) welcome and introduce all new students and Hokie Families to campus and its resources during First-Year Orientation (FYO). FYO is a two-day program, held in July, with Day One facilitated by our OLs and Day Two by the academic departments. OLs will develop leadership, communication, and customer service skills that will be used while they assist new students with their transition to Virginia Tech. OLs are assigned a returning student leader known as a First-Year Student Orientation Coordinator (SOC) as a mentor and guide during the Spring semester.

Student Orientation Coordinators

First-Year Student Orientation Coordinators (SOCs) are returning Orientation Leaders (OLs) who provide leadership, support, and assistance for the orientation programs. Their responsibilities fall under the following categories: Team Training & Development, Operational Planning, and Orientation Events. Along with these responsibilities, SOCs are required to participate in all required events listed below. In the Fall semester, each SOC will have two 1-1s with his/her supervisor and attend two SOC Team meetings. All SOCs must sign and abide by the rules of the behavior contract distributed when offered the position.

Transfer Orientation Leaders

Transfer Orientation Leaders (TOLs) welcome and introduce all new students and Hokie Families to campus and its resources during Transfer Orientation (TO). TO is a one-day program, held in June, that is facilitated by our TOLs and academic departments. TOLs will develop leadership, communication, and customer service skills that will be used while they assist new students with their transition to Virginia Tech. TOLs are assigned a returning student leader known as a Transfer Student Orientation Coordinator (TSOC) as a mentor and guide during the Spring semester.

Hokie Camp Leaders

Hokie Camp Leaders (HCLs) lead a 3 day, 2 night extended orientation experience that allows incoming students to be known deeply through inclusion exercises, wellness practices, team building activities, and time to become acclimated with the academic, traditional, and social aspects of our Virginia Tech community. Hokie Camp Leaders need to be students who care about the Virginia Tech family, who are skilled at connecting with others in small group and large group settings, who understand the value of vulnerably, and who have a heart for service.

Hokie Camp Exec

Exec (Exec) members are returning student leaders in New Student Programs that have had one or more year(s) of experience with Hokie Camp. Hokie Camp Exec lead all Hokie Camp Leaders through all sessions of Hokie Camp, serving as a role model and mentor to the leaders. Hokie Camp Exec play a crucial role in the planning and implementation of Hokie Camp.

Hokie Camp Student Directors

Student Directors (SDs) are returning student leaders in New Student Programs that have previous years of experience with Hokie Camp and a strong, proven track-record of leading others, caring about our community, and dedication to new students’ transition to Virginia Tech. Student Directors provide direct leadership for the Exec team and Hokie Camp Leaders. Student Directors play a critical role in the long range planning, dreaming, development, and implementation of Hokie Camp.
