Student leadership positions

New Student Programs relies on the service of Virginia Tech students to welcome new Hokies and Hokie Families to our university. Our student leader positions include the following:

First-Year Orientation Leader (OL)

First-Year Orientation Leaders (OLs) welcome and introduce all new students and Hokie families to campus and its resources during First-Year Orientation (FYO). FYO is a two-day program, held in July, with Day One facilitated by our OLs and Day Two by the academic departments. OLs will develop leadership, communication, and customer service skills that will be used while they assist new students with their transition to Virginia Tech.

Transfer Orientation Leader (TOL)

Transfer Orientation Leaders (TOLs) welcome and introduce all new students and Hokie families to campus and its resources during Transfer Orientation. Transfer Orientation is a one-day program, held in June, which is facilitated by TOLs and the academic departments. TOLs will develop leadership, communication, and customer service skills that will be used while they assist new students with their transition to Virginia Tech.

Student Orientation Coordinator (First-Year and Transfer Orientation)

Student Orientation Coordinators (SOCs) are returning Orientation Leaders (OLs) or Transfer Orientation Leaders (TOLs) who provide leadership, support, and assistance for the orientation programs. Their responsibilities fall under the following categories: Team Training and Development, Operational Planning, and Orientation Events. Along with these responsibilities, SOCs are required to participate in all required events listed below. In the fall semester, each SOC will have multiple one-on-one meetings with their supervisor and attend SOC team meetings. All SOCs must sign and abide by the rules of the behavior contract distributed when offered the position.

Welcome Week (Hokie Hi) Chair

Welcome Week Chairs are returning student leaders in New Student Programs who have previous years of experience with Hokie Camp or Orientation and a strong, proven track record of leading others, caring about our community, and dedication to new students’ transition to Virginia Tech. Welcome Week Chairs provide direct leadership for the Welcome Week Leader team. Welcome Week Chairs play a critical role in the long range planning, dreaming, development, and implementation of Hokie Hi Welcome Week. The Welcome Week Chair position would work with New Student Programs starting in the fall 2017 semester and continue through the end of the spring 2018 semester in May. The Welcome Week Chair position would return to start work again on August 1, 2018 and continue through the completion of Hokie Hi Welcome Week on September 7, 2018.

Hokie Camp Student Chair

Student Chairs (SCs) are returning student leaders in New Student Programs who have previous years of experience with Hokie Camp and a strong, proven track record of leading others, caring about our community, and dedication to new students’ transition to Virginia Tech. Student Chairs provide direct leadership for the Exec team and Hokie Camp Leaders. Student Chairs play a critical role in the long range planning, dreaming, development, and implementation of Hokie Camp.

Hokie Camp Exec

Exec members are returning student leaders in New Student Programs who have had one or more years of experience with Hokie Camp. Hokie Camp Exec members lead all Hokie Camp Leaders through all sessions of Hokie Camp, serving as a role model and mentor to the leaders. Hokie Camp Exec members play a crucial role in the planning and implementation of Hokie Camp.
